I’m Julia Tausch, a writer living in Toronto with my partner, David and a very furry senior cat named Emma. I wrote the novel Another Book About Another Broken Heart and have published food writing, fiction, and essays in places like Joyland, Vice, Bon Appetit, and The Hairpin. You can find more of my writing here. I work part-time at the University of Toronto as a grad administrator and spend most mornings writing a novel about marine mammals.

I’m also an avid vegan cook and recipe developer. I love fermentation projects and making my own plant-based cheeses and seitan creations. I share a lot of that on my Instagram and hopefully here, too! I was taught to cook by my mom and myself, nothing professional, but I have delved into recipe writing lately and I’m excited to do more of it. I’m vegan for social justice reasons — I’d rather not kill or harm a guy for food.

What is The World According to Tausch?

This newsletter is called The World According to Tausch after The World According to Garp by John Irving, a novel I loved as a teen that features a writer who cooks. Which is exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Currently the goal is to:

  1. Talk about my fiction writing and reading more. I have a new novel on the go, and it seems good to “put that out there,” maybe partly to hold myself accountable. I typically send a letter the first week of every month, covering what I wrote, read, and ate the month before.

  2. Share more recipes and food ideas in a casual, somewhat imperfect format. That happens irregularly, as it happens.

All of this might change as we go along. My current motto is “It doesn’t have to be comprehensive!” because, well, that’s a problem for me sometimes. And also this of course:
